While it got off to a promising start, the second season of Doom Patrol both felt a little aimless and ended on an unfortunate cliffhanger. It would have been in ignominious end to one of the most daring and clever superhero series out there. Thankfully, they will get another bite at the apple as HBO Max renewed Doom Patrol for season 3. While the first season of Doom Patrol aired exclusively on the DC universe streaming service, HBO Max will be the exclusive home for the series.
The executive producer of Doom Patrol had this to say in a statement:
“On behalf of the wonderful cast, writers and crew, we are thrilled and grateful for the opportunity to return to Doom Manor. and we are especially thankful for our partners at Berlanti Productions, Warner Bros. Television, DC universe and, of course, HBO Max.”

Sarah Aubrey, the chief of original content at HBO Max added:
“Doom Patrol came to HBO Max with an already deep and passionate fan base and has risen to the top as one of the most watched Max Originals on the platform. The series sits well in our portfolio and we are glad to greenlight a third season to continue this distinctive style of storytelling that resonates so well with critics and fans alike.”
As they work to resolve the story of Abigail Shapiro’s Dorothy Spinner and her “friend” the Candlemaker, they will likely take a page from their fellow DC universe series Titans. The first episode of season 3 will likely feature the Doom Patrol resolving the last season’s storyline. The next episodes will then send them on a new journey. The second season, while nonetheless excellent, seemed to meander towards its climax. The lack of Alan Tudyk’s Mr. nobody (or anyone else) as a central antagonist resulted in an unfocused season. This also gives storytellers a chance to start a season with the team united in purpose, which is something we’ve not yet seen save for the final episodes of the first season.

Obviously, there is no further information about when the series will go back into production. It took more than a year to get a second season of Doom Patrol. and we know that HBO doesn’t mind creators taking their time to deliver quality series. (Looking at you, Westworld.)
